Mitchell County is in picturesque northwestern North Carolina. The terrain is very mountainous with many hiking trails, waterfalls, and rivers for rafting and fishing. The Appalachian Trail and the Blue Ridge Parkway are accessible in the county. The population as of the 2020 census was14,903. Estimated racial composition in 2020 was 91% white, 5% Latino, and the rest mixed or other.

Trinity Episcopal Church is in the Town of Spruce Pine, nicknamed the “Mineral City” due to the large deposits of gems and minerals – particularly quartz and feldspar. As of the 2020 census, Spruce Pine had a population of 2,194. Mitchell County is also home to the nationally recognized Penland School of Craft, which has led to many resident artists living and working in the area.

In 2024, much of western North Carolina suffered from the effects of Hurricane Helene, and Spruce Pine was no exception. Some of the effects were extended power outages, road closures due to washouts, devastation to public water and sewage facilities, lack of cellular service, and general widespread damage to property and infrastructure. Trinity Episcopal Church was closed for several weeks. The downtown area was flooded, and most businesses were closed for months. However, our church and community are resilient and have made steady progress in rebuilding.
