TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH

Acolyte Responsibilities

Primary Role - The Acolyte is responsible for carrying the cross in the processional/recessional and assisting the Priest/Deacon at the Altar.

If you are assigned as Acolyte for the service, it is a good idea to arrive at least fifteen minutes before the beginning of the service, for robing.

During the Processional hymn, the acolyte will hold the processional cross and lead the procession to the altar. At the altar, the acolyte will bow to the altar cross and then move to the right and place the cross in its holder.

After the Gradual hymn, the acolyte will lift the cross from its hold and lead the Deacon/Priest into the center aisle for the reading of the Gospel. He/she will face the reader. After the reading, the Acolyte will return the cross to its holder.

During the Eucharist, the Acolyte will assist the Priest and Deacon in handling of the Sacraments and moving them to and from the credence location. The Acolyte may also assist in administering communion, as necessary and instructed by the Priest or Deacon.

At the end of the service, the Acolyte will carry the cross and lead the recession similarly to the procession. The recession generally begins as the recession hymn is ending. Look to the Priest for timing. After the service is concluded, place the cross back into its holder.
